Every Ulla Johnson collection is made with hand crafted artisan fabric from global artists. In collaboration with Abby Cheney, we created a central sculpture that echoed the patterns found in the artisanal lace, velvet, and cotton fabrics. Cheney is a sculptor whose work focuses on creating mesh-like sculptures that emphasize the precarity in our everyday possessions. By placing this sculpture in the center of the show, we emphatically support the hand crafted legacy of fabric, weaving, and domestic craft, and resist the temptation of unsustainable and unethical fabric production. As the set designer, I worked with Andrew and Abbey to concept, model, and draft the space.
